North Myrtle Beach sits on a salty foundation of sand and shells. Dig a little deeper, though, and you’ll find deep roots in music and dance.  In April, the area holds its annual festival that celebrates Shag, a traditional dancing style popular along the Carolina coast.

The Society of Stranders (S.O.S) will host the Spring Safari festival from April 16–25. Each year, the event draws thousands of shaggers from up and down the East Coast. They come to display their moves and kickoff the official start of Spring.

Throughout the 10-day gala of tunes, food and dance, area lounges welcome visitors with various shindigs, long ago dubbed “tea parties.” The festivities usually include performances by popular beach-music bands, as well as instructors offering classes for everyone from novice to experienced shaggers.

Grand Strand Vacations, a North Myrtle Beach property rental firm, opens its more than 350 luxury homes and condos for the rhythmic guests. This year, Grand Strand is offering the gift of two free nights during a four-night stay.

“We love shag, and the folks who share in the boardwalk memories of couples dancing the night away,” said Nancy Seddinger, owner of Grand Strand Vacations. “After getting down in the sand, we want to give our revelers a comfortable place to kick back, relax and catch up with old friends. There’s no better way to do this than at a Grand Strand property.”

When out-of-towners aren’t sipping cocktails and enjoying the ocean view from their seaside getaway, they’ll most likely be exploring the goings on at North Myrtle.

On Saturday April 25, the Spring Safari wraps up with the beloved parade down Main Street. The tradition is presented by the Association of Carolina Shag Clubs (ACSC). During the parade, floats wow spectators, competing for the most original design and best shag theme.  The street turns into a fairgrounds, with dancers and day-trippers enjoying food, entertainment and tunes.

S.O.S. started in 1980. That spring, the first festival drew roughly 5,000 people eager to compete in dance contests and listen to beach music. Over the years, the bash grew in size and events. Today, the Spring Safari marks a time for getting back to summer and reuniting with friends.

“We absolutely love this time of year,” Seddinger said. “This is a big coup for our region. We’ve become synonymous with something very special to people – beach dancing. It’s more than just the entertainment value. This is people’s memories of the past.”

Aside from free nights, Grand Strand Vacations also is offering golf packages with discounted green fees, as well as girls’ weekend deals. Pets are welcome.

Canadian Travelers Ready to Vacation Grand Strand Style

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

A tradition that goes back nearly five decades, the Canadian-American Days Festival kicks off March 13 in the Myrtle Beach area. The weeklong celebration puts out the proverbial “Welcome Mat” for neighbors to the north, as well as spring breakers from around the United States. Activities include sporting competitions, cultural happenings, concerts and more.

Museum, Ripley’s Moving Theater, Ripley’s Haunted Adventure, and Ripley’s Marvelous Mirror Maze. In addition, major entertainment hubs like Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament, Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede and Alabama Theatre announced price cuts on certain shows.

“Can-Am has been going on since the early ‘60s and every year it just seems to get better,” Seddinger said. “It gives folks from other parts of the world a chance to relax beachside and take in a taste of the Carolina coast. We’re excited to see old friends again, and make new ones as well.”

From Sandcastles to Medieval Castles

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

While holding court at your Grand Strand Vacations coastal palace, many of our visiting kings, queens, princes and princesses build castles in the sand, complete with turrets and salty moats. At the end of the day (depending on high tide), though, King Neptune sends in a barrage of waves to level these carefully crafted strongholds.

If you haven’t gotten your fill of castles, head over to one of the area’s premier attractions: Medieval Times Dinner & Tournament. With its combination of a medieval banquet and competition between knights, it is rated one of the top dinner attractions in North America.

The history of Medieval Times dates back to 1973 when the first one opened in Majorca, Spain. The entertainment venue was created to mimic a historic medieval tradition. Royal families would invite guests to a festival and feast that would include a show of sorts – knights competing on horseback. In the early years of Medieval Times, this display took place in outdoor arenas, which were split into sections named for regions of medieval Spain. Guests cheered for the knights fighting for their region.

With proven success, the company decided to take the show across the Atlantic 10 years later, building the first U.S. castle in Kissimmee, FL. Five castles later, Medieval Times opened here in 1995. Today, there are nine 11th century styled castles throughout the United States and Canada.

One of the reasons Medieval Times continues to be popular is because of the company’s commitment to being historically accurate when it comes to weapons and costumes. To keep the show fresh, the characters and storyline change every few years.

The most current characters include (descriptions from Medieval Times):

King Philippe
After years of war and sacrifice, King Philippe finally secured the peace of his ancient enemy, the King of Leone. As a young man, the glory of battle drove the King, but as the day approaches when his son will inherit the crown, the good King desires only peace.

Prince Tristan
On a mission for his father, the King, Prince Tristan must leave his bride in the King’s care and ride to Leone. With hope for peace in the Realm, he travels to sign a treaty that will free the two kingdoms from the harness of war.

Princess Leonore
Newlywed Princess Leonore, radiant in her noble beauty, longs for the return of her husband, Prince Tristan. Alone at the ramparts, she seeks news of his return and holds on to the memory of their bittersweet parting.

Royal Falconer
The Royal Falconer performs wonders with his mighty birds of prey. The tournament includes a live flight of the royal falcon, soaring over the heads of the King’s guests.

Lord Chancellor
Introduces the Tournament of Knights, where the King’s guests will behold incredible feats of skill and daring performed by the brave champions who hail from every corner of King Philippe’s realm.

Herald of Leone
Amid the grand celebration, a message from the King of Leone is delivered by this brave horseman. He has prepared a special stallion presentation for the King and his guests.

Master of Horse

The kingdom is home to a prized collection of magnificent Andalusian stallions. Throughout the evening the Master of Horse and his team will present the King, Princess and their guests with several dazzling displays of superior horsemanship.

The Black & White Knight
Don Iofre Santa Creu is the defender of the ancient shrine at Santiago de Compostela. Adorned in Black & White, he is mightiest in skill among an order of warrior priests whose arrival upon the field brings despair to the impure of heart.

The Blue Knight
As a young squire, Don Alberto del Mau earned his place among the Knights of the Realm in a desperate battle. Renowned as a champion of the defenseless, the Blue Knight’s blood will not be cooled, nor his vengeance postponed, for those who bring war and unquiet to Valiente.

The Red & Yellow Knight
Lord del Font is the personal champion to the Count of Perelada. The sword of this invincible soldier has raised him to fame. Defeat and regret have been the reward of the countless challengers who have offered their honor and their shields to the point of the Red & Yellow Knight’s lance.

The Yellow Knight
In defense of Navarre, Don Eduardo del Rey is the rock. The Yellow Knight is well-versed in the arts of chivalry, yet in attack, he is the lion uncaged! Let the ring of steel herald his arrival and the smoke of battle linger in his wake, for a legend of the Realm walks among us.

The Red Knight
Truest son of mighty Castilla, Baron Ruiz de Roig has been called the “lion’s heart” in many a battle. Set him at liberty, and paralyze the enemy! With little pleasure will the ambitious look upon the banner of Castilla hanging in the list.

The Green Knight
This warrior of Asturius is an unquestioned master of weapons. Don Temple has never been unhorsed in the joust. No mantle of peace or of serenity will ever grace his shoulders, for his temper is the dragon’s claw.

Here at Grand Strand Vacations, we love a good dinner and a show, especially when it involves sword-fighting, jousting and other medieval games!

From now until Dec. 30, kids 12 and under are free (one child admission when you purchase one full-priced adult ticket). Just mention discount code KFW9. For more information on the free admission for kids or to purchase tickets, call (843) 236-4635, ext. 2703, or go to http://www.medievaltimes.com/promotions/kids-free.php.

Grand Strand Vacations: Taking Center Stage at the Beach

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

A Grand Strand Vacations getaway means more than lazy days on the beach and leisurely reading in the hammock. North Myrtle Beach and its surroundings are stuffed to the gills with cultural activities.

One of the newer additions to the artistic scene is Atlantic Stage, a professional theater company formed in 2008. A group of area actors, directors, set designers, etc. collaborated with others from Coastal Carolina University to start the entertainment hub. This summer they found a permanent home at the 79th Street black box.

Their mission is simple: Atlantic Stage is “committed to bringing the best in Broadway, Off-Broadway and new plays from regional theatre across America.” Being admirers of great performances, we at Grand Strand Vacations just had to check out the buzz surrounding one of North Myrtle’s latest creative outlets.

Housed inside a former high school, the Atlantic Stage theater is part of a $500,000 refurbishment project for Coastal Carolina University’s Myrtle Beach Education Center. Atlantic Stage – the only theater company in the area – has an agreement with the university to use the theater with its 146 seats, box office space and reception area.

The theater company also plans to reach out to the arts community by opening up the reception space to artists and related organizations. It’s all about enhancing the cultural landscape of the Grand Strand, said Atlantic Stage artistic director John Woodson.

The first production in the new space will be “Proof.” The play premiered off-Broadway in 2000 but soon moved to the Walter Kerr Theatre on Broadway. It was showered with a number of Tony Award nominations, taking home Best Play, Best Actress (Mary Louise Parker) and Best Director (Daniel Sullivan). “Proof” also was awarded the Pulitzer prize for drama in 2001. In 2005, the play was made into a film starring Gwyneth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Plot synopsis from Myrtle Beach’s Alternatives NewsMagazine:

The play concerns Catherine, the daughter of Robert, a recently deceased mathematical genius and professor at the University of Chicago, and her struggle with mathematical genius and mental illness. Catherine had cared for her father through a lengthy mental illness. Upon Robert’s death, his ex-graduate student Hal discovers a paradigm-shifting proof about prime numbers in Robert’s office. The title refers both to that proof and to the play’s central question: Can Catherine prove the proof’s authorship? Along with demonstrating the proof’s authenticity, the daughter also finds herself in a relationship with 28-year-old Hal. Throughout, the play explores Catherine’s fear of following in her father’s footsteps, both mathematically and mentally.

Atlantic Stage’s production is being directed by Monica Bell and will star Caroline Cuseo, Chad Bagwell, John Woodson and Kristi Rau McIntyre. It premieres Nov. 5 and runs Nov. 6-7, Nov. 12-15 and Nov. 19-22.

The rest of the theater company’s season includes:
-    “Santaland Diaries” Dec. 2-20: A slacker works as a Macy’s elf during the holiday crunch. At first the job is merely humiliating, but as thousands of visitors start pouring through Santa’s workshop, he starts taking out his frustrations on children and parents alike.

-    “Almost Maine” March 10-28: On a cold, clear moonless night in the middle of winter, all is not quite what it seems in the remote, mythical town of Almost, Maine. Almost’s residents find themselves falling in and out of love in unexpected and often hilarious ways.

-    “Eleemosynary” April 28-May 16: Sensitive and probing, this masterful play examines the subtle and often perilous relationship between three remarkable women: a young girl, her mother and her grandmother.

Tickets are $25 each for regular admission, $20 each for seniors and educators, and $15 each for students. For more information, call 1-877-ATS-TKTS or visit http://www.atlanticstage.com/index.html.

An Atlantic Stage production makes for the perfect evening when staying at one of our more than 350 luxury beach homes.

Best of the Beach 2009 – Grand Strand Realty

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Before chatting about the latest goings-on at North Myrtle, we at Grand Strand Realty want to thank everyone who catapulted us to local fame! Yes, your many votes resulted in the Sun-News naming us as a finalist for the 2009 Best of the Beach Readers’ Choice awards. Specifically, Grand Strand Realty got the nod in the category of Real Estate Agency.

“It’s such an honor to be chosen by people in our own backyard,” said Nancy Seddinger, owner of Grand Strand Realty and Grand Strand Vacations. “We’ve really tried to build our business around the beauty of North Myrtle Beach. Where else can you find such a variety of activities for all ages, yet still maintain that coastal charm. Over the last 55 years, we’ve grown as a team with this community.”

Aside from Grand Strand Realty, a number of other area businesses got kudos from the Sun-News and its readership. One such honoree, the House of Blues, just happens to be a place we recommend to many of our beach home visitors.

The North Myrtle restaurant, watering hole and concert hall won first place in the category: “Night Spot for Live Music.”  Besides hosting regional favorites, the venue also serves up national acts from all music genres. On any given night, you can sip beach-inspired cocktails and watch major performers take the stage. Fun!

While we at Grand Strand Vacations like the tunes, their fantastic food and reasonable prices also keep us coming back. Some of our favorite dishes include Rosemary Skillet Cornbread, “The Elwood” Blackened Cajun Chicken Sandwich, Full Rack BBQ Basted Baby Back Ribs and White Chocolate Banana Bread Pudding. Yum!

The House of Blues has been a North Myrtle Beach staple since setting up stakes in 1997. Located near a section of town locals commonly call “White Pointe Swash,” the neighboring property holds tales of high-profile pirates – including Blackbeard and Anne Bonney. It’s said these swashbucklers used the area as an exclusive hideout.

While the House of Blues may not resemble a pirate ship, its architecture, artwork and interior design definitely give it a rustic, down-home feel. In fact, many North Myrtle visitors stop by the business just to see its interesting décor.

Built to resemble a Southern farmhouse and tobacco warehouse, the restaurant/music hall is covered with tin from an old barn that once stood in Jackson, Miss. The inside of the House of Blues is decorated with one-of-kind folk art pieces by Jimmy Lee Sudduth and Ruth Mae McCrane. Supposedly, a metal box containing mud from the Delta Mississippi is kept underneath the stage.

In addition to being a great venue for music and food, the House of Blues hosts a variety of events, including Murder Mystery Dinner Theatre. During your meal, a murder occurs, and you become a part of the investigation. Everyone is a suspect. This dinner show is held most Friday and Saturday evenings.
